World Food Day – 16 October
World Food Day is observed on October 16 each year to raise global awareness and attention towards the issues of food shortages and hunger worldwide.
This celebration has been organized by the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) since 1979. The date of October 16 was chosen as it marks the founding of the FAO in 1945.
The Objectives of World Food Day
1. Raise awareness about global hunger, malnutrition, and poverty, which continue to be major challenges in many countries, especially in developing nations.
2. Promote international cooperation in addressing hunger and ensuring food security for all. This includes advocating for sustainable agricultural systems and fair food distribution.
3. Encourage innovation in agriculture and food production, including the use of modern technologies, to increase food output, reduce waste, and conserve natural resources.
World Food Day Theme
Each year, a different theme is selected to highlight various aspects of global food issues.
For example, in previous years, themes such as sustainable food systems, agricultural innovation, and food waste reduction have been emphasized.
In 2024, the theme is “Right to Foods for a Better Life and a Better Future.”
In addition to awareness programs, World Food Day is also accompanied by various activities such as talks, exhibitions, campaigns, and charity events organized by governments, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and local communities.
The issue of hunger and food shortages is not just about sufficient food production but also involves fair access to food.
Therefore, the celebration of World Food Day focuses on efforts to ensure that everyone around the world has access to safe, sufficient, and nutritious food.
